my body is a temple

Paul tells the Corinthians that “their bodies are not their own…they were bought at a price.”  1 Cor 6:19 says “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”  

 

As we kick off 2020 we want to look at the various facets of our body…the spiritual, physical, emotional and corporate/together pieces that make up our body.  In addition to the preaching series in our weekend services we want to invite you to join us for a 21-day fast.  If you have never fasted as a Christian you are probably not alone.  Jesus speaks about fasting in the sermon on the mount.  Jesus uses an interesting word when speaking to people…He says “when you fast”.  Jesus assumes that fasting is normal thing that we do like prayer or giving.  He talks about doing these different spiritual practices with the right motives.  


Here is a quick description of how we will do the 21-day fast.

SONrise’s 21 day spiritual fast, is designed to be flexible so that you can participate at any level.  God takes us where we are at and wants us to experience the abundant life of His Spirit.

WHEN?

Saturday, January 11 to

Friday, January 31


HOW?

Denying your physical desires and pleasant foods (this may include meat, sugar, carbonated beverages, electronics, news, magazines, social media, etc) while saturating your spiritual desires with intensified devotion (this may include Bible reading, prayer, worship, solitude, relational bonding, etc.

WHO?

Everyone at SONrise is strongly encouraged to join in at appropriate levels.  Those with necessary work-related responsibilities or dietary concerns can modify as needed.  Teens are encouraged to join in at stretching levels but modify as needed for school functions.  All teens are encouraged to unplug from electronics, social media, news, magazines, or other influences that have created a heavy presence.  Everyone should set some goals and then execute those goals with unrelenting diligence.

We have added a few extra events and tools to help you saturate in God during this fast.  

 

Men - 2nd Saturday morning at 8am

 

Women - 2nd Tuesday night at 7pm

 5 Types of Intermittent Fasting:  

Alternate-Day Fasting

  • Eating only every other day.  (Fast days no food or 500 calories)

The Warrior Diet

  • Eating only fruits and vegetables during the day and then eating one large meal at night.  

16/8 Fasting (best for beginners)

  • Fast for 16 hours a day and limit your eating to 8 hours.  Most often, this simply involves not eating anything after dinner and skipping breakfast the next morning.  

Eat-Stop-Eat

  • Pick 1 or 2 days out of the week and fast for 24 hours, eating nothing from dinner one day until dinner the next day.  On the other days, eat normally.  

5:2 Diet

  • For 5 days of the week, eat normally.  For the remaining 2 days, restrict your caloric intake to between 500-600 calories daily.  



 

Fasting Distractions: The definition of a “fasting distraction” is anything you instinctively engage to avoid boredom.  These have a tremendous influence on the chaos of the heart.  Most of us don’t ever recognize their true impacts on everyday life; emotional trigger, negative mental states and our dullness of faith in our spirit.  These are considered indulgences and should be trimmed back or eliminated completely for the 21-day period.

  • Hobbies
  • News - Web-based, Newspapers, Apps, 
  • Social Media - Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Blogging

  • Extra unnecessary travel
